Notes: Jin decides to be generous and give Kame a birthday present. This is not a Jin/Kame fic, lol. And Yamapi does appear, eventually. Hope the ending wasn’t too rushed. Kame’s birthday fic!

With his latest drama to film, it meant that meeting up with the rest of KAT-TUN was something of a rarity in comparison to his cast members. Unfortunately, it also meant that Kame was sometimes too tired to play around with the others when he did meet up for work, using those short breaks to take quick naps instead. After work was done, most of the members had shuffled off, saying their quick goodbyes and heading off to whatever activities they had. Kame himself had to head over for more filming, and had assumed that he was the last to leave when Jin’s presence startled him.

“Hey, you’re still here.”

Jin nodded. “I have to ask you something.”

Kame was slightly taken aback by Jin’s serious tone, wondering if there was something bothering Jin and whether the latter was looking for someone to talk to. “Is something wrong?”

“Oh, no, there’s nothing wrong.” Jin replied quickly, scratching his head in slight embarrassment. “Actually, erm, well I wanted to get something for your birthday but I couldn’t think of anything, cos you know, we’re not exactly the best of friends lately, and erm, what do you want for your birthday?”

Kame blinked, then paused to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating and that Jin was really there in front of him, asking him a question. “You’re going to give me a birthday present?”

“Yeah, isn’t that what I said?”

You’re giving me a birthday present?” Kame repeated, emphasizing his disbelief that Jin would give him, or anybody for that matter, a birthday present. Kame couldn’t even remember when was the last time Jin gave anyone an actual present, although he had a vague recollection of Jin insisting that he had prepared one for Yuichi the last time.

“Don’t put it like that.” Jin said, trying to keep the whining tone out of his voice. “I’m going to share the present with Yuichi. Or well, I’m going to ask him if he wants to share.”

“Well, since you’re in the mood to share, why don’t you share Nakamaru with me as my birthday present?”

“What? No way! That’s never going to happen so you can forget about it! Never!” Jin protested loudly, glaring at Kame in a somewhat threatening manner.

Kame snorted. “Geez, Akanishi Jin, don’t you know how to take a joke?”

“Well it’s not funny at all.” Jin replied indignantly as he crossed his arms. Kame heard Jin mumbling something but couldn’t quite catch everything except for ’stupid drama’, ‘naked guys’ and a couple of swear words.

“Thanks for the thought, but you don’t need to get me anything, Jin.” Kame said, smiling. “I’m sure you have enough things to worry about.”

“Eh? Worry about?” Jin looked at Kame, confused.

Kame shrugged innocently. “Maybe when you were off having fun in Hawaii, Nakamaru was having his own fun too, right?”

Jin scowled. “Here I am trying to be nice, and there you are being, well, not very nice.”

Kame laughed. “Anyway, I have to get going now. See ya next time!”

It was about three days later when Kame received a letter. A love letter to be specific, signed off as ’secret admirer’. Kame thought of the possibility of it being random fan mail but the fans were technically not supposed to know his home address, and the handwriting looked suspiciously like Jin’s. Picking up his mobile phone, he dialled Jin’s number.

“Jin, are you secretly in love with me?” Kame deadpanned when Jin picked up the line.

“What? Of course not!” Jin replied in a disgusted tone, though somehow, Kame sensed a tinge of… excitement in Jin’s voice? “Why would you even think that?”

“Then why did I receive a love letter written by you?”

“Was it signed off by me?”

“No, but-”

“Then it’s not me! It’s just someone whose handwriting’s similar.” Jin stated. “I guess this means you have a secret admirer.”

“Or a stalker.”

“It can’t be a stalker.”

“Why are you so sure?”

“Well, it just doesn’t seem like a stalker. A stalker would sound possessive and know every single thing you do and stuff like that but the letter wasn’t like that.”

“And how do you know the contents of the letter?” Kame asked, getting suspicious. “Jin, what are you up to?”

“What makes you think I’m up to something? I’m just guessing what the letter was about.”

“Should I show this to Nakamaru to ask him for advice?”

“Definitely not!”

“Why not?”

“He’s… He’s bad at giving love advice.”

“He is? Why?”

“Stop asking ‘why’, you’re starting to sound like an annoying kid asking his parents numerous questions.”

“Okay, so what do you advise me to do with this letter then?”

“Well, read it, enjoy it, keep it, and wait for the next one?”

Kame chuckled. Fine. He’ll wait and see what Jin was up to. And if he didn’t like what Jin was planning, then he’ll just have to take ‘revenge’ and show Yuichi this ‘love letter’.

* * * * *

About two days later, Kame received another love letter… and the day after, and a few days after that too. The letters were all type-written this time, and Kame couldn’t help but smile in amusement. He also noted that they was much longer, and mentioned things like having known Kame for a long time, about some fight and how he and this secret admirer had worked together to overcome obstacles.

Even though Kame knew that Jin definitely did not have any romantic feelings for himself, Kame still can’t help but find that this ’secret admirer’ character that Jin came up with was just a clone of himself. The things mentioned in the letters… Honestly, Kame felt like it happened to Jin and himself too. This just amused Kame even more, and he couldn’t help but imagine what Yuichi’s reaction would be when shown the letters.

“So, has the secret admirer of yours wrote to you again?” Jin asked when the group met up again for work.

“Yes.” Kame nodded. “And I still think all those letters were sent by you.”

“What? Why do you still think that?” Jin frowned.

“Well, there were certain things in the letters that just reminded me of stuff that happened between the two of us.”

“Eh?” Jin made a face, before frowning again. “Are you sure they don’t remind you of someone else?”

“Who could it be?”

“Someone else who’s maybe like me but not really similar to me?” Jin hinted.

“I need more hints, Jin.”

“Someone you’ve known for almost as long as you’ve known me?” Jin hinted again, completely forgetting that he was supposed to pretend that he wasn’t involved in this whole ’secret admirer’ thing.

Kame pretended to be deep in thought, then he smiled brightly. “Could it be that Nakamaru’s my secret admirer?”

“Definitely not!” Jin shouted, attracting the attention of others, while Kame just burst into laughter seeing Jin’s annoyed face. Jin only scowled some more.

“Then why don’t you just tell me who this secret admirer is?”

“I can’t.” Jin replied stubbornly. “I don’t even know who he is.”

“Okay, so if this secret admirer is a real person, but isn’t you or Nakamaru… Does this secret admirer even know that you’ve been sending me letters on behalf of him?”

Jin looked at Kame for a few seconds, before sighing melodramatically. “Fine, you win. He doesn’t know. But I assure you, he likes you.”

“You know, I’m not sure whether to be amused or bemused to know that there really is a ’someone’ and it isn’t just you being Bakanishi.”

“Why? Shouldn’t you be happy? Isn’t that what you wanted for your birthday?” Jin pointed out.

“I didn’t say that I wanted a secret admirer for my birthday.”

“No, you didn’t specifically say that. But you wanted Yuichi, and I ain’t gonna share him with you. So I inferred that you just wanted a person, and therefore, I’m going to give you a person for your birthday.” Jin explained his logic.

“Hm, I take that back. It is just you being Bakanishi.” Kame rolled his eyes. Considering how Jin’s been behaving less like a noisy idiot for years now, Kame hadn’t expected this illogical side of Jin to surface again. How wrong he was. “Jin, thanks for wanting to get me a present for my birthday, but really, you don’t have to do so at all.”

“But that guy really, really loves you.”

“Who loves Kame?” A new voice interrupted the conversation. It was Koki. “It’s not some pervert, right?”

“Che, what does it matter to you?” Jin whacked Koki. “I’m having a conversation with Kame, don’t interrupt.”

“I should film this and sell it to the fans. They’ll be all gushing over the fact that you two actually talk to each other.” Koki said as he put his arm around Kame’s shoulder. “I’m still curious as to what you guys are talking about though. Someone likes Kame-chan? I need to make sure it’s not a horrible person.”

“If I say who this person is, would you consider going out with him?” Jin asked, looking at Kame.

Kame lifted his hand, signalling Jin to stop talking. “Actually, I don’t want to know anymore. And I don’t think the person will be pleased to know that you’ve confessed his feelings on behalf of him.”

“This is so confusing.” Koki commented.

“Urusai.” Jin chided, before pouting. “Okay, I won’t bother trying anymore. And don’t expect any other present from me.” He said, before turning away and heading towards where Yuichi was seated.

“Someone likes you?” Koki asked Kame when Jin had left.

“Apparently.” Kame shrugged.

“You’re not at all curious about who this person might be.”

“Going by the clues that the baka gave me, I think I might know who Jin’s referring to. But because of that, I think it’s just Jin’s overactive imagination.”

“Jin’s clues?” Koki looked at Kame, confused. “So who do you think it is then? Is this person cute? Cool? Pretty?”

“A mix of those three.” Kame smiled fondly as he thought of the person in mind. “Although sometimes a bit uncool.”

“Cute, quite cool and pretty? That sounds like you, Kame-chan.” Koki’s eyes widened. Kame laughed, hitting Koki lightly on the head, before the other continued. “Maa, it has to be someone really outstanding to match Kame-chan anyway.”

“You exaggerate.” Kame remarked. If anything, I’m the one who’s going to find it tough to be able to stand next to that person, Kame thought.

* * * * *

Yuichi laughed like crazy when Kame showed him the love letters that Jin’s been churning out. He laughed so hard that Kame could see tears in the older man’s eyes. It took a while before Yuichi finally calmed down.

“You know, the content of the letters themselves are alright, it’s just the idea of Jin writing these that cracks me up.”

“Shouldn’t you pretend to be jealous? These letters are addressed to me and not to you after all.” Kame teased.

“Nah, he’ll only love it if I got jealous, so I mustn’t show it.” Yuichi waved dismissively. “Jin means well though.”

“Hm?”

“I’m sure you’ve figured out who Jin’s doing this for.” Yuichi said as he handed the letters back to Kame. “I must admit that I’ll like to see the same outcome too.”

Kame took back the letters, staring at them as he pondered for a while, before coming to a decision. Tilting his head as he looked at Yuichi, he asked somewhat sheepishly. “Do you have a pen and paper with you?”

* * * * *

“Yuichi…” Jin said, his eyes practically sparkling as he absorbed what the other had told him. He took the envelope that Yuichi was holding out to him, then waved it in the air. “Can I read what he wrote?”

“No.” Yuichi rolled his eyes. “Your only job is to hand it over to your best friend and nothing else.”

“But you know what he wrote, right? So you can tell me.”

“No, I don’t. Do you honestly think I’m that nosy as to hover around him while he wrote something so private?”

“Aren’t you curious at all?”

“Well, whatever Kame wrote, I’m sure it’s much better than those that you wrote to him.”

“He showed those to you?” Jin’s voice rose a notch, annoyance seeping in. “I’m helping him and he betrays me.” Jin mutters under his breath.

“What you did… It was a nice thing to do.”

“You think so? Then do I get any reward for being nice?”

“What are you? A kid?”

“I don’t care what you call me as long as I get a reward.” Jin said in a sing-song voice.

Yuichi tapped the envelope in Jin’s hand. “Finish the task first then we’ll see about a reward.”

* * * * *

Kame almost jumped when his mobile phone rang. He didn’t know why he was so fidgety and nervous lately. It’s been a couple of days since he got Jin to pass the letter to the other person, and there hasn’t been a single reply. Maybe it was something he should have expected though. It was tough just for the two of them to get back on cordial terms.

Even so, he had held high hopes, if only because of Jin’s stupid letters.

“Moshi moshi.”

“Has Yamapi contacted you yet?”

“No.” Kame felt a sudden urge to strangle Jin, who should feel lucky that Kame couldn’t kill him through a telephone call.

“He should be contacting you soon.” Jin said with confidence. “I heard him booking a table at a restaurant.”

“Maybe he’s going on a date with someone else.” Kame muttered.

“I also heard him checking with the manager to see when you’re free for dinner.”

“…Really?” Kame bit his lip. He didn’t want to get his hopes up too high.

The next day, he received a letter in his mail. There was an invitation card, inviting him to a birthday dinner. Kame was caught between being happy and finding it weird that Yamapi would sent an invitation card by post instead of just calling him directly.

Deciding that he should try not to think too much about such trivial things, Kame marked the date and time on his planner. Things will turn out well, he told himself. And if it didn’t, at most it’ll just be a birthday to forget.

* * * * *

The meeting was awkward. After they ordered their food and drinks, silence befell them. It was only after a while before Yamapi broke the silence.

“Was the letter really from you?”

“Eh? Ah…” Kame nodded slightly, trying not to show his embarrassment.

An expression of huge relief appeared on Yamapi’s features. “I thought Jin was trying to play a prank on me.”

“Oh…”

“And when he set up this dinner date and told me to meet you here, I was afraid you weren’t going to show up.”

“Eh? Oh…”

So Yamapi hadn’t invited him to dinner? It was all part of Jin’s scheming again? Kame really wanted to kill that idiot now for putting them in such an awkward situation. At the same time, he felt disappointed at the truth. Yamapi had no intention of celebrating Kame’s birthday.

“I didn’t know he did this.” Kame said, trying to appear calm. “Sorry. Jin’s been a little insane lately. He keeps insisting on getting me something for my birthday and coming up with weird ideas like getting the two of us back together. I’m sorry he forced you to come. You really didn’t have to. I-”

“Kazuya.”

Kame stopped short when Yamapi interrupted his rambling, calling him by his first name. He hadn’t heard Yamapi call him like that for so long, and yet, Yamapi said his name in a way that sounded like he’s been doing it all the time.

“I want to give us a chance too.” Yamapi said in a determined voice. Belated, but it was still a reply to Kame’s letter.

Kame hadn’t exactly confessed his undying love and devotion to the other or anything, for that would have been an exaggeration particularly when he still wasn’t a hundred percent sure, plus it wouldn’t have been fair to Yamapi. But he had asked for another chance to try things out, to start things from scratch. To do it the proper way this time.

“I can’t say I’ll be able to forget what happened.” Yamapi continued. “But I think I was at fault too anyway. And you’re right, we should start afresh, so… Kamenashi Kazuya, can I have the honour of being your boyfriend?”

Kame couldn’t help but laugh at Yamapi’s question. It sounded ridiculous, and yet Yamapi could still look at him with the usual gentle smile, as if he hadn’t just asked a cheesy question.

“I must say, this is a rather brilliant birthday present from Jin.” Kame said in between dinner.

Yamapi looked up, eyebrows raised. “I’m a present?”

“Yep, that means you’re mine.”

“That sounds… nice.”

“It sounds overly possessive. Like I kidnapped you or something.”

“Nah, if I’m yours, it isn’t kidnap.”

“… Now I know why you’re best friends with him.” Kame rolled his eyes. “I’m attracted to bakas.”

“But I’m more loveable than him, right?”

“Whatever you say.”
