Chapter Six Point Five
(Aiba and Ohno’s first meeting.)

It was the first day of school at Hyouyama High and Aiba felt a little lost. He was supposed to meet some of his friends but was late, and they were now nowhere in sight. Holding the timetable slip that the office had given to him when he had reported to school, he walked around, trying to follow the crowd. Not really knowing where he was heading to, he suddenly bumped into someone.

“Itai!” Two voices cried out as the collision caused the two students to fall onto the floor.

“Ah, sumimasen.” The two apologised simultaneously as they got up, picking up the timetable slips that had fallen onto the floor.

Both looking lost, they stared at their timetable slips, and looked up to find a sign on the wall that indicated which block to go to depending on their class. Aiba turned to the left while the other turned to the right.

Following the signs on the doors, Aiba finally found the classroom he was looking for. 1-1. As he entered, he found that most of the class was silent, sitting in front of their own canvas drawing and painting. Sports classes have to take Art lessons as well? Aiba wondered, as he approached one the girl that was sitting closest to him.

“Anou, ohaiyo. Aiba Masaki desu. Dozo yoroshiku.” Aiba greeted.

The girl looked up, pushing up her glasses. The way she stared at Aiba, he thought that he looked like some sort of alien. After a while, the girl finally spoke, albeit so softly Aiba had to really listen carefully to hear her. “Namikawa Chihiro desu.”

“Ah, Namikawa-san, nice to meet you.” Aiba tried to be friendly. “Erm, I didn’t know we had art lessons.”

She stared at him as if he just said something insane. “But we’re an art class aren’t we?”

“Eh?!” Aiba exclaimed.

“Shhh!” Everyone else in the class hissed at him.

“Gomen.” Aiba apologised sheepishly, lowering his volume. He turned back to Chihiro. “Did you say that this is an art class?” She nodded. Aiba scratched his head. “Ah, did they put me in the wrong class? I’m supposed to be in a sports class.”

“The sports classes are in the other block.”

Aiba looked down at his timetable slip. “This is 1-1 right? Eh, wait, my name isn’t Ohno Satoshi!”

“Shhh!”

The classroom was bustling and everyone seemed so boisterous and exhuberant that it made Ohno think twice about entering. The setting just looked a bit odd for an arts class, Ohno felt. Taking a deep breath as if he was getting ready to enter a battleground of some sort, Ohno pulled the sliding door opened and stepped in. Immediately, he was greeted by a bunch of friendly but unartistic-looking guys.

“Ohaiyo! Suzuki Daisuke desu! I’m in the hockey team and I’m thinking of joining bowling as well! How about you? What’s your name? What sport do you play?”

Ohno blinked, feeling even more out of place and regretting his decision to enter the classroom. He should have just gone home. Realising that they were expecting an answer from him, Ohno tried to recall what they had asked him in the first place. “Er… Ohno Satoshi desu. Eh, I don’t play sports.” As they continued to stare at him, but this time with looks of confusion, Ohno added. “I draw.”

“Draw?” The boy named Daisuke asked. “As in art?”

Ohno nodded.

“Aren’t you supposed to be in the arts class then?”

“Yeah… you mean this isn’t an arts class?”

“No. This is S-1-1, a sports class. Arts classes are in the other block. I supposed you’re actually in A-1-1, class 1-1 of block A.” Daisuke explained.

“You’re in the wrong class, dude!” Another person exclaimed.

Ohno looked down at his timetable slip, confused. “But it says here that my class is S-1-1.”

Daisuke took the slip from Ohno and eyed it as if trying to analyse every detail. After a few seconds, he looked up and smiled at Ohno. “Ohno-kun, when did your name change to Aiba Masaki?”

“Aiba Masaki?” Ohno’s eyes grew wide as Daisuke showed him the name on his timetable slip. He suddenly recalled his earlier collision with another student, when both had dropped their slips onto the floor. “Ah! I must have accidentally took his timetable slip while he took mine!”

As Ohno rushed back to the office to get another copy of his timetable slip, he had another head-on collision again, and wondered what was with his luck that day.

“Ah! It’s you!” The other person exclaimed, making Ohno look up. It was the same guy that he had collided with earlier. “Ohno Satoshi?”

Ohno nodded. “Aiba Masaki?”

The other guy nodded. They switched their timetable slips with each other, thanking and apologising at the same time. As the two walked to their correct classrooms this time, Aiba suddenly called out.

“Ohno-kun! Can I call you Oh-chan?”

Ohno stared at Aiba, who was smiling like an idiot, waiting expectantly for his answer. Oh-chan? He remembered his junior, Kame, asking if he could call him by that when they first met. No wonder he felt a sense of deja vu. Ohno nodded in reply.

“Okay, then you can call me Aiba-chan! Or Ma-chan! Or whatever… it’s up to you.” Aiba scratched his head sheepishly, before waving at Ohno. “Ah, see you around then, Oh-chan! Bye bye!”

Ohno waved back as he watched Aiba turn around and run off to where he had came from earlier, then he realised that he better hurry to class as well. “Ah, yabai! I’m gonna be late.”
