Chapter Nine
“Sho-senpai, I saved a seat for you!” Taisuke said as Sho, Nino and Yamapi filed onto the bus. Sho looked back to check that Nino was alright with it, before moving towards the seat next to Taisuke. Nino took the empty seat next to Okada.
“Eh, Nino, we aren’t gonna sit together?” Yamapi asked as he moved into the empty seats across the aisle from Nino.
“Nah, I’ll sit with Okada-senpai. You can save that seat for Kame.” Nino replied, before grinning.
Yamapi raised an eyebrow, but decided not to argue with Nino further, especially not in front of everyone. He leaned back into his seat next to the window, ignoring his best friend. So much for not interfering with my love life. Moments later, he heard Nino’s loud voice.
“Kame! We saved a seat for you here!”
“Oh okay. Thanks!”
Yamapi felt his eyes stray towards Kame as the other approached him, rather chirpy despite the time of the day. The touch of Kame’s skin on his, as Kame settled into his seat, sent an electric shock through Yamapi. He tried to act normal.
“You’re always this chirpy early in the morning?”
“Hm?” Kame pondered. “Not really. But I’m probably not as grumpy as you.”
“Well, I can’t help it that I’m not a morning person.”
“The way you look though, one might not be able to tell.”
“What do you mean?” Yamapi turned to Kame, raising an eyebrow questioningly. But Kame merely smiled as if hiding a secret.
“Anyway, I’m glad that I’m in the same team as Pi.”
“Don’t change the subject.” Yamapi chided, as if trying to pick a fight for no reason. “And I think you mean you’re glad that you’re in the same team as Akanishi, right?”
“No.” Kame replied, then paused thoughtfully. “On the contrary, because Jin is there, it’ll make me feel inferior since he’s so good at basketball.”
“Does that mean I’m lousy since I don’t make you feel inferior?”
“Ah, no, no, that’s not what I meant! Pi is good too, but uh, Jin’s y’know, MVP for our year. So he’s good but that doesn’t mean you’re lousy! And anyway, I’m happy to be in Pi’s team because we haven’t been hanging out together a lot lately.” Kame stuck out his tongue, feeling a bit embarrassed.
Yamapi tried to hide his smile. Argh! Why does he have to be so cute?!
For the rest of the ride, Yamapi remained silent, using the excuse that he wasn’t a ‘morning person’. He plugged in his mp3 player and turned towards the window, hoping to avoid eye contact with Kame as much as possible. Yamapi wasn’t sure how much time had passed when he suddenly felt something against his shoulder. He turned to see Kame sound asleep, head rested on his shoulder.
He wasn’t sure whether to push Kame off or to adjust his position so that Kame would be more comfortable, but looking across the aisle, he noticed that Nino and Okada were also sound asleep. Nino had rested his head on Okada’s shoulder, Okada leaning against the window. Yamapi tried to see if Sho had any reaction but saw that Sho was busy playing cards with Taisuke. If Sho-kun’s okay with Nino sleeping on Okada’s shoulder, Ryo-chan should be okay too, right? He thought.
Yamapi moved a little so that Kame wouldn’t be in such an uncomfortable position, then closed his eyes and listened to the music, ignoring the quickening of his own heart beat. It was a long time before he sensed something flash in front of him, his eyes fluttering open. Nino grinned back at him, cell phone in hand.
“What are you doing?” Yamapi frowned.
“Memento.” Nino replied as he busied himself with the phone. Yamapi felt his own phone buzz. Taking it out, he saw that Nino had sent him a picture. Yamapi raised an eyebrow at him, but Nino just shrugged and returned to his seat.
Opening the picture file, Yamapi almost dropped his phone. Nino had taken a picture of him and Kame asleep, Kame’s head on his shoulder, Yamapi’s head leaning slightly against Kame’s. Anyone who looked at it would think it was a picture of a couple sleeping peacefully. Yamapi quickly shut his phone when he felt Kame stir.
“Pi, are we there yet? …No? Wake me up when we’re there ne…” Kame mumbled, before resting his head back on Yamapi’s shoulder and dozing off once more.
The warm weight against his shoulder reminded him of what he had been missing all this while. His fingers brushed the hair out of Kame’s eyes, as he watch the other boy sleeping peacefully, a smile forming on his face. Yamapi wished then that the bus ride would never end.

After depositing their bags, everyone had to quickly report to their respective teams. Besides Yamapi and Kame, Okada was also in their team, while three other Hyouyama players — Jin, MatsuJun whom they had met last time, and their buchou Morita — made up the team of six.
Upon entering the gym, Kame was immediately greeted by Jin who came bounding towards him. “Kamenashi-kun!”
“Hey.” Kame waved. He wasn’t quite sure what Jin thought about him since their last meeting, what with all the rumours that were flying since then. Jin though appeared as if nothing had changed.
“I’m so glad Kamenashi-kun’s in my team. When I found out that I was in the same team as Buchou and Matsumoto I was thinking that they’ll definitely bully me and I won’t have anyone to help me!” Jin rattled on. “Oh yah, Yamashita-kun’s in the same team too! That’s good ne, that you two get to be in the same team. It would have been sad if you two got separated.”
“Oi Akanishi! Urusai!” Morita shouted. “Start doing your stretches now. Come over here, I’ll help you.”
“Eh, kekkou desu. Kamenashi-kun will help me. Ne? Ne? We must build our inter-school bond!” Jin said quickly, wanting to avoid the pain that he was sure his buchou would inflict on him. “Kamenashi-kun, I’ll help you with stretching first.”
“Ah, sankyuu.” Kame said. “And actually, Jin, you don’t have to call me Kamenashi-kun. It sounds very formal when you call me that, and I’m already calling you Jin.”
“Sou, sou! Ne, then can I call you Kazu-chan?”
“Okay.”
“No!”
Yamapi, who had been quietly standing to one side, replied simultaneously as Kame agreed. Kame looked at Yamapi quizzically.
“No- No- No problem!” Yamapi said quickly, trying to cover up his slip. He didn’t realise that he had blurted out his thoughts.
“Ah, maybe I should call you something else instead, or Yamashita-kun will get jealous, ne?” Jin chuckled. “Since that’s what Yamashita-kun calls you. What do other people usually call you?”
“Huh? Yamapi, jealous?” Kame wasn’t sure if he should laugh Jin’s statement off.
“Sonna koto nai da yo.” Yamapi protested. “But anyway, everyone calls him ‘Kame’.”
“Kame ka. Sou ka!” Jin nodded. “Okay Kame, let’s do stretches now before Buchou screams at me again.”
“No!” Yamapi blurted out again, and almost slapped himself for it. “I mean, uh, I’ll help.”
“Eh, but we don’t really need three people to help each other with stretches right?” Kame scratched his head. “I’m going to help Okada-senpai ne. Since Pi’s helping Jin.”
“Okay! Yamashita-kun, let’s start now!” Jin said as he sat down on the floor and began stretching.
As Kame was helping Okada do some back stretches, he watched the other two doing their own warm-ups. Yamapi looked like he was very much in pain, and Kame was concerned when Yamapi yelped.
“Itai! Oi Akanishi, can you not be so rough?! Do you know how to do stretches?!”
“Those two are very friendly, huh?” Okada deadpanned.
“Uh, sou.” Kame nodded, amused. He had been worried that things would have continued to be awkward, much like it had been for the past few weeks, and wasn’t sure what the other’s reaction would be to being in the same team as himself. With Jin in the team as well nonetheless. After all, it was where it all started, wasn’t it? As Yamapi continued to banter with Jin however, Kame was glad to see that things seem to be turning out pretty well.
Maybe this was a sign that things would be alright between Yamapi and himself.
Kame had really missed hanging out with Yamapi. All the times when Yamapi would come whining to him about being abandoned by Nino, or the times when Yamapi would go out on ‘dates’ with him to cheer him up when it was his turn to be abandoned. He even missed Yamapi’s teasing. Maybe this camp would prove just the right impetus.
“Ne! Ne! Can I call you ‘Yamapi’ too?” Kame heard Jin ask.
“No.”
“Why not?! Nande?!”
“Urusai Akanishi!” Morita interrupted. “Go run 50 laps!”
“Iyada!!”
* * * * *
Kame sat cross-legged on the floor, sifting through his bag, while Yamapi lay on his bed, flipping lazily through a magazine. Neither of them had really spoken much to each other since they had returned to their room after training. There were times when Kame would try to start a conversation, but Yamapi would always act like he was too busy to pay attention.
Throwing his magazine aside, Yamapi was about to get ready to sleep when there was a knock on the door. Dragging his feet towards the door, he pulled it open, only to be greeted by a loud voice as the person bundled into the room.
“Konbanwa!” Jin greeted and did a peace sign as he welcomed himself in and plopped himself onto Kame’s bed. “Ne, ne, can I please stay over here tonight? Matsumoto keeps bullying me! Boohoohoo.”
It’s not like you’re gonna get up from Kame’s bed if we said ‘no’, Yamapi thought as he stared blankly at Jin, totally unconvinced by Jin’s fake crying.
“Ah, I guess it’s okay.” Kame answered. Yamapi wished that Kame wouldn’t be so kindhearted, but then again, this was Jin, and Kame was always gonna have a soft spot for the latter. Yamapi almost groaned in frustration, but bit his lip instead.
“You can take my bed then.” Yamapi turned to Kame, seeing that Jin had already made himself at home. “I’ll take the floor.”
“Iie, it’s your bed! I can sleep on the floor, it’s okay. It’s carpet anyway.”
“No, I insist that you take my bed.”
“Ah but-”
“Why don’t you two just share?” Jin’s voice interrupted. “You two are a couple anyway, so there’s nothing wrong with it.”
The two of them stared blankly at Jin at first, silent, before Yamapi spoke up. “Er, Kame, just take the bed, I-”
“C’mon, don’t be so shy. Is it because I’m here? Don’t worry, I won’t look!” Jin interrupted once more.
Before Yamapi could protest further, Kame caught him off guard. “Yeah, maybe we should just share the bed instead of arguing over who takes it.”
Eh? Yamapi’s jaw dropped a little. He felt his heart beat quickened at the thought of sharing the bed with Kame, and probably stopped breathing for a moment when Kame took his hand and pulled him into bed. Yamapi was grateful when the lights were turned off because he was starting to feel the heat rise in his cheeks.
The two lay there side by side, touching. Yamapi could hear his own breathing, could hear Kame’s breathing. They were so close, Yamapi was thinking that maybe he should just pretend to roll off the bed and sleep on the floor so that he wouldn’t feel so happy and guilty at the same time. As the silenced stretched on, he soon heard Jin’s snoring filling the air. That just made it harder for Yamapi to fall asleep.
“Ne, Pi…” There was a soft whisper from next to him. Kame was awake too.
“Hai?” Yamapi whisper back, hoping his voice wasn’t cracking out of nervousness.
“It’s a bit squeezy isn’t it?”
“Yeah… I should just sleep on the floor.”
“No.” Kame said as he grabbed Yamapi’s arm to stop the latter, his voice raising in volume, but still soft enough so that Jin wasn’t awakened. “I didn’t mean that.”
The silence stretched on again, when suddenly, Yamapi felt Kame turn towards him, snuggling closer. He felt warm, and comfortable. Yamapi laid there, still, wondering if Kame was already asleep. The warmth that Kame provided seem to cause Yamapi to feel sleepy all of a sudden, as his eyes started to droop, and his mind wandered off to dreamland.

awwww how sweeett hahaha i didn’t go on a-baka to read this..actually im not even sure if u posted it on a-baka..but AWWWW kame and ryo!!! hhehehe well if part 2 is gonna be up by kame’s birthday..thats only 3 more days! ganbatte!! im looking forward to it~~ what happens with akanishi?? =]] and why dont sho and nino tell the others..? i was waiting so long for the 2nd part hahaah i read double quite a while ago =DD heheh thx for writing!!

And I’m also happy that Jin didn’t get to appear more than for this one scene *gets killed by Akame-fans* XD Haha, no seriously, he’d just make things even more complicated right now, while Kame and Ryo needed to figure their issues out first ^.~
Kame constantly sulking just makes me wanna pat him all the time – So cute *laughs* It’s a pity Yamapi never got to stay close to him for long, but well, shouldn’t have Ryo get jealous, too, right now, ne? *pats Ryo as well for having to bear with a jealous!Kame* *rofl*
Speaking of Ryo, for some reason the ‘Yamapi’s willing slave’ term had me crack up so badly. Wonder if he’d really go as far as become a willing slave for Pi like Kame suspects XD
And I loved this part:
“But I like Kame too.” Yamapi stated easily.
“Yamapi, you’re making this whole thing more complicated. Don’t make the shape even weirder!”
“It’s still a square.”
“Oh yeah, you’re right.”

See! It’s posted! It’s posted even if Idol-chan said it wasn’t going to be~! x3 And it’s 6 pages of a lovely, printed ficcy~ It’s even more lovely than the…oh my, I forgot mom bought be doughnuts! *looks at the clock* It’s past 11 pm ;___;~ Too late for sweets…
I absolutely loved the “keitai strap” quarrel~ I’m obessed with matching straps and it was so cute~ Ryo-chan is really mean to Kame sometimes ^_^; Such a baka. But on the other hand it was incredibly sweet how when he asked Jin to go on a date with Kame, but lied to Kame later~ *glomps both of them* Just why was Jin simply sitting there and not even noticing them? Should I feel sorry for him, because he was tired or scold him for ignoring others? *blinks*
I laughed at Pi’s conspiracy… So childish. So was the conversation with Taisuke…. How come you guys make them so…how to put it not to offend the boys… well… stupid? XD
“See! Three! There’s one more I don’t know about!”
“Eh, Kame, I was talking about you.” – my favorite part xD So clueless it hurts~!
Sho-kun’s “time-out” also fitted there perfectly. Is his mind ever off the court? Of course, if Nino isn’t around?
Eh, Nino was lucky to get that surprise bday party. It had to be a surprise if it was a week earlier, nee. Such a pity it usually happenes in fanfiction and movies only. I’d like one, too. But before I started complaining at my friends not being creative enough, I dropped my jaw at Taisuke’s announcement. That boy is scary ^_^; *glomps Taisuke* Or maybe Yamapi the Drama Queen is the scary one..?

yay! I really liked this. and yup, it was really sweet of Ryo to ask Jin out for Kame even though he likes him. poor Ryo, and I loved sulking and jealous Kame! ^_^ I also agree with SumeragiAeka about the layout. Love the pictures used, and looking forward to reading the next chapter!

ohhhhhhh…. this is great! i read “double” not too long ago and really enjoyed it. i’m so glad you’re now writing (another, lol) fic with a prominent kame… and potentionally one of my favorite pairings, too.
