DOUBLE FAULT

Chapter Four

The bell had just rang signalling the end of the school day. Ryo was about to ask Kame if he wanted to hang out somewhere, hoping that Kame wasn’t still mad at him for kicking him out of the house. When Ryo did that, he thought Kame would understand, but he realised that Kame seemed so sensitive these days and got upset at him for the smallest of things. Sure, it was probably not nice of him to make Kame go all the way to his house only to ask him to leave because Uchi was there, but he hadn’t seen Uchi since he left Osaka. And he didn’t feel comfortable with the thought of Kame and Uchi being in his house together. His ‘other half’ and his ‘one true love’… it just didn’t seem right to Ryo.

Kame had ignored him since that day though. Despite the fact that they sat next to each other in class and during lunch break, they hardly spoke. Ryo was getting annoyed by Kame’s childishness, but since this was Kame, Ryo found himself wanting to spoil the other to make up for his actions.

Before he could open his mouth to ask Kame out, he stopped when he saw Yamapi walk into their classroom, heading straight towards Kame’s seat.

“Kame-chan, I need to bring you somewhere.” Yamapi said as he started to help Kame pack his bag. “Quick, we have to go before we’re too late.”

“Huh? Where are we going?” Kame asked, confused. Ryo was equally confused.

“You’ll know when we reach there. Hayaku!” Yamapi grabbed Kame’s bag in one hand, and the latter’s hand in the other, rushing out of the classroom before Ryo could protest.

As Ryo watched the two leave, he felt confused, and a little peeved, and a little mad at the thought of Yamapi holding Kame’s hand, which made him more confused. This was what he always felt when he saw Uchi with someone else, and to feel the same things because of Kame was something bewildering for him.

“Aww, Ryo-chan, your other half just abandoned you.”

“Taisuke, I don’t think it’s really smart of you to say that to Ryo-chan right now.” Toma tugged at Taisuke’s shirt, indicating to Taisuke to back away before Ryo does something scary.

“I’m just stating the truth.” Taisuke said bluntly. “After all, it was Ryo-chan who first abandoned his other half right? For his, what did Kame say, OTL?”

Toma was almost going to bang his head on the wall when Ryo spoke up. “I didn’t abandon Kame, I just…” Ryo stopped short. He did abandon Kame. No wonder Kame was so mad at him and was getting back at him right now.

“Ne Ryo-chan, I’m just curious, is Uchi-kun your, erm, boyfriend?” Taisuke asked.

“What do you mean?” Ryo pretended he didn’t know Taisuke’s meaning. It was more because he didn’t want to answer Taisuke’s question, or didn’t know how to. “I’m going off. See you guys tomorrow.” Ryo picked his bag up and left hurriedly before Taisuke or Toma could question him further. His head was in a mess as it is, no need for them to give him more of a headache.

“Yamapi, where are you taking me to?” Kame asked once more as they bundled onto the train just before the doors closed. “And why are we in such a hurry?”

“I’m bringing you to that ramen place that I’m told Akanishi goes to after school. I’ve already checked. He has no basketball practice today and his soccer practice is later in the afternoon, so he would head down with his friends to that ramen place for lunch, then return to school after that. If we don’t hurry, we might miss him.”

“Erm, okay, I’m assuming you managed to dig all those information out of your dates, but why do I have to be there?”

“To give him another opportunity to ask you out.” Yamapi replied easily. “Although in this case, it’ll be more like asking you to watch him in soccer practice. Then after soccer practice you can either whine in that cute way of yours about how boring soccer practice was so he must treat you to make it up for it, or you could act cool about it. I still haven’t figured out which image appeals to him more.”

“Doesn’t this make me a bit desperate?”

“You are, aren’t you?” Yamapi teased.

“Who says I’m desperate?” Kame pouted. “You’re the one pulling me around and making me go to some ramen place to pretend to bump into him. I didn’t ask you to do that.”

“But you’re the one who asked him out on a date the first time you talked to him.”

“Geez, does the whole school know about this already?”

“Don’t worry, I’m sure that just made you stand out more.” Yamapi put an arm around Kame’s shoulder, comforting him in a teasing sort of way. “I doubt anyone would be so daring as to do that so quickly, so your desperation makes you leave a strong impression on him. Just, don’t let him challenge you to soccer or another game of basketball. Since you’ve already let him know that you’re interested, you should now make him more interested in you by showing him your cute side, or your cool side, and not the side of you who loses to him at sports.”

“I can beat him at baseball.”

“I’m sure you can.”

“It’s true.”

“Yeah yeah.” Yamapi chuckled.

“Maybe I should challenge him to baseball and show him how good I am at it.”

Yamapi laughed. “Why didn’t you just join Hyouyama’s baseball team then? You’ll be in the same school as him.”

“Well I wanted to play basketball too. Ueda-senpai told me that since I have no rivals in baseball, I should find rivals in other sports.”

“What kind of logic is that?” Yamapi made a face. “Wait, did you just say Ueda-senpai? Do you mean that MVP guy who’s better than Sho-kun and Aiba-san?”

“Hai. He was from my school. Didn’t you know?”

“Ah, I forgot what school you were from.”

“Fine.” Kame pouted again. “It doesn’t help that I’m not as good as Ueda-senpai ne? Can’t tell that we used to play basketball together, since our levels are so different.”

“I didn’t say that.” Yamapi poked Kame’s cheek. “Anyway, it can’t be like how Taisuke and Sho-kun are so different in standards right?”

“Maybe it’s worse.”

Yamapi leaned in to whisper into Kame’s ear. “You know, you’re so cute right now that I could eat you.”

“Huh?” Kame’s eyes widened, cheeks turning a little pink, causing Yamapi to laugh.

“C’mon, the Kame I know has better self-esteem than that. You’re supposed to be like Nino! Well, not exactly, but almost. Confident of your ability, assured of yourself, and perfectly used to people showing their admiration for you.”

“That sounds more like Ryo-chan.”

“Hm, true. Maybe that’s why I love you three so much!” Yamapi glomped Kame just as the train pulled to their stop.

Kame laughed as he allowed himself to be dragged out of the train station towards the ramen place. When they finally reached the place, Yamapi shoved him lightly towards the entrance.

“Now, go in there, find a seat, and order anything you like. I’ll pay for your lunch, though I’m hoping Akanishi will offer to give you a treat. And make sure you sit in a really obvious place so that the first person he notices when he enters is you, okay?” Yamapi quickly gave his instructions to Kame.

“Eh? You’re not coming in?”

“No.”

“But why?”

“If I was there, then he wouldn’t want to disturb us and might not ask you to join him.”

“But then I would have to eat alone.”

“Yes.”

“But I would feel so lonely.”

“It’s only for a while. And haven’t you eaten alone before?”

“No.”

“Just this once then?” Yamapi looked at Kame pleadingly. “I’ll be at the shop opposite so if there’s any problem you can just call me or email me.”

“What if Jin doesn’t even come today?”

“He will. I’m 99% sure.”

“Only 99%? Iyada, I don’t want to eat all by myself.” Kame whined once more as Yamapi pushed him into the store.

“Be good, Kame-chan. If all goes well, you’ll never have to eat by yourself again.” Yamapi said, before dashing off to the opposite side of the street.

Kame found a seat at the counter, still a bit miffed that he had to sit all by himself and eat all alone and appear so pathetic and miserable. After ordering a bowl of ramen, he picked up his phone.

“What’s wrong?” Yamapi’s worried voice filtered over the line.

“Why can’t you just sit here next to me? There’s no one else in this place and I feel so awkward. You can just sit next to me and if Jin comes in you can pretend that you don’t know me and that we’re just strangers sitting next to each other.”

“Huh? C’mon Kame, I’m sure the crowd will be in soon and so will Akanishi.” Yamapi tried. “Anyway, are you sitting in a place that he can see you if he enters?”

“Yeah. I think so.”

“So he’ll walk right up to you the moment he comes in and you won’t feel lonely anymore. Now, be good.” Yamapi quickly ended the call to stop Kame from whining to him some more, though he found it extremely cute that Kame was making a fuss over eating by himself.

Minutes later, Yamapi’s phone rang again. “Kame, what’s the problem now?”

“The bowl of ramen is huge! I can’t possibly finish this. Pi, why don’t you come over here and share the ramen with me.”

“I’m sure you’ll be able to finish it. Don’t you love ramen?”

“But that doesn’t mean I can eat so much. I didn’t even finish the ramen the other time when you treated me to lunch, remember? And this bowl is even bigger!”

Yamapi sighed, before looking out of the window when he spotted Jin and his friends walking towards the ramen place. “Kame-chan, Akanishi is just a few steps away. Don’t waste this opportunity! Call me only if it’s important okay? I’m putting the phone down now. Good luck!”

* * * * *

“Kamenashi-kun!” Jin greeted Kame who was still staring at his phone, pouting. “I didn’t expect to meet you here.”

“Ah, it’s a small world I guess.” Kame replied, thinking that he sounded and looked like an idiot right now. “My friend told me the ramen here is good so he brought me here.”

“Your friend has good taste! The ramen here is awesome, right Ojisan?” Jin grinned at the owner of the restaurant.

“Yah, it’s good.” Kame nodded, taking another mouthful of noodles, unsure as to what else to say to Jin.

“Where’s your friend?”

“Oh, he’s gone opposite to buy something.”

“I see, I see.” Jin nodded, before starting to move towards the table where his friends were already settled. “Anyway, nice seeing you again, Kamenashi-kun.”

Kame watched as Jin left without saying anything else. No asking him to join their table. No asking him to go to soccer practice. He was sitting all alone, at the counter, eating really good ramen. Kame ate faster, hoping to finish as fast as possible so that he could get out of there and complain to Yamapi about the latter’s lousy plan. But there was just too much ramen, and he couldn’t finish, which made him feel bad. He left hurriedly, annoyed.

When Kame strode into the shop opposite, Yamapi was finishing up a plate of yakisoba. He plopped down in the seat opposite Yamapi, glaring at the latter.

“Pi, your plan didn’t work at all. And I ended up sitting all by myself, trying really hard to finish that gigantic bowl of ramen. I told you it was huge and I couldn’t finish eating it and asked you to share it with me but you decided to be mean and left me all alone and came here to eat yakisoba.”

“Maa, maa, gomen ne. I was doing it only for your sake. I didn’t think that the bowl of ramen would be so huge. Nino didn’t say anything about it. And I only left you by yourself so that I wouldn’t be an obstacle to Akanishi if he wanted to ask you out. As for the yakisoba, I didn’t intend to eat but then I started to get hungry…”

“That’s why I told you to share the ramen with me. And it was good ramen too!”

“Okay, okay, next time if you can’t finish I’ll share it with you, okay?” Yamapi patted Kame’s head. “Don’t be so mad now. You want some yakisoba?”

“I’m full!”

“Hai, hai. Just kidding. Eh… how about ice cream?”

Kame tilted his head, pondering. “What type?”

* * * * *

“Kame-chan’s just like a kid.” Yamapi remarked as he watch Kame eat his ice cream happily. “Ice cream is enough to cheer you up.”

“Say that again and I’ll shove the ice cream into your face.”

Yamapi laughed. “Ne, what do you want to do now?”

“You wanna come over to my house to hang out? We can do our homework together.” Kame suggested as he finished eating his ice cream.

“Feel lonely doing homework by yourself?”

“I think between the two of us, you’re the one who feels lonely since Nino has abandoned you ne.” Kame stuck out his tongue at Yamapi.

“Ouch.” Yamapi put a hand to his chest melodramatically. “Rub salt into the wound, why don’t ya.”

Kame chuckled, then sighed. “Hai… we’ve both been abandoned. No one wants us.”

“Ah, I’m sure Akanishi was just busy so he didn’t think it’ll be nice to make you sit there and watch him practise and get bored. I’m sure he’ll ask you out next time.” Yamapi tried to comfort Kame.

“It’s not just Jin…” Kame looked down at his feet and started swinging them. “Even Ryo-chan has abandoned me for his OTL. So much for me being his other half.”

“Kame-chan… you actually like Ryo-chan a lot right?”

“Eh?” Kame looked up. “Wha- what do you mean?”

“Well, I know Kame-chan likes Akanishi but sometimes I think that maybe you actually like Ryo-chan more.”

“Wh- why would you think that?”

“Wh- why are you stammering?” Yamapi laughed as he poked Kame’s cheek. “I just said that based on my observations. Am I wrong?”

“Stop teasing me.” Kame pouted.

“Hai, hai, do you need me to buy more ice cream for you to cheer you up then?”

Kame eyed Yamapi, his lower lip jutting out even further as he pouted some more.

“Alright, I won’t tease you anymore.” Yamapi reached out to mess Kame’s hair. He jumped off the railing they were sitting on. “C’mon let’s go on a date!”

“Date? Again?”

Yamapi stopped and turned around, making a sad puppy face at Kame. “You don’t want to go on a date with me?”

“Now looks who’s the one behaving like a kid.”

“That’s why Kame-chan should pamper me and go with me on a date ne.”

“Okay, okay, I’ll go on a date with you.” Kame rolled his eyes. “But you’re paying for everything.”

“No problemo.” Yamapi signalled the ‘okay’ sign. “And since you’ve already eaten ramen, we’ll now go shopping, followed by a movie. Then we’ll take purikura, have dinner, take a romantic walk on the beach, and stay there overnight so that we can watch the sun rise the next morning…”

“You remembered.”

“Of course.”

“But I need to go home early today. My uncle’s coming over for dinner.”

“Okay, so we’ll just go shopping then I’ll accompany you home. We’ll just do everything else another time.”

“Another date?”

“Hai!”

“At this rate I don’t need Jin to ask me out anymore.”

Yamapi laughed as he grabbed Kame’s hand and pulled him along behind him.

    @Chapter 1
    *is still jumping around*
Aw~ I’m so happy u finally posted it up! *hearts*
And I’m also happy that Jin didn’t get to appear more than for this one scene *gets killed by Akame-fans* XD Haha, no seriously, he’d just make things even more complicated right now, while Kame and Ryo needed to figure their issues out first ^.~
Kame constantly sulking just makes me wanna pat him all the time – So cute *laughs* It’s a pity Yamapi never got to stay close to him for long, but well, shouldn’t have Ryo get jealous, too, right now, ne? *pats Ryo as well for having to bear with a jealous!Kame* *rofl*
Speaking of Ryo, for some reason the ‘Yamapi’s willing slave’ term had me crack up so badly. Wonder if he’d really go as far as become a willing slave for Pi like Kame suspects XD
    And I loved this part:
“But I like Kame too.” Yamapi stated easily.

“Yamapi, you’re making this whole thing more complicated. Don’t make the shape even weirder!”

    “It’s still a square.”

    “Oh yeah, you’re right.”
    ————————————–
    Yay for Taisuke’s logic! XDDD
But to keep it a square I’m sure Jin will have to show up again soon. Really curious how this next encounter is going to be~
So, don’t forget (haha, as if my constant bugging would let u forget about it XD) to post the next chapter up on Kame’s bday, ne? ^_______________________^

    @Chapter 1
See! It’s posted! It’s posted even if Idol-chan said it wasn’t going to be~! x3 And it’s 6 pages of a lovely, printed ficcy~ It’s even more lovely than the…oh my, I forgot mom bought be doughnuts! *looks at the clock* It’s past 11 pm ;___;~ Too late for sweets…

I absolutely loved the “keitai strap” quarrel~ I’m obessed with matching straps and it was so cute~ Ryo-chan is really mean to Kame sometimes ^_^; Such a baka. But on the other hand it was incredibly sweet how when he asked Jin to go on a date with Kame, but lied to Kame later~ *glomps both of them* Just why was Jin simply sitting there and not even noticing them? Should I feel sorry for him, because he was tired or scold him for ignoring others? *blinks*

I laughed at Pi’s conspiracy… So childish. So was the conversation with Taisuke…. How come you guys make them so…how to put it not to offend the boys… well… stupid? XD

“See! Three! There’s one more I don’t know about!”
“Eh, Kame, I was talking about you.” – my favorite part xD So clueless it hurts~!

Sho-kun’s “time-out” also fitted there perfectly. Is his mind ever off the court? Of course, if Nino isn’t around?

Eh, Nino was lucky to get that surprise bday party. It had to be a surprise if it was a week earlier, nee. Such a pity it usually happenes in fanfiction and movies only. I’d like one, too. But before I started complaining at my friends not being creative enough, I dropped my jaw at Taisuke’s announcement. That boy is scary ^_^; *glomps Taisuke* Or maybe Yamapi the Drama Queen is the scary one..?

“childhood sweethearts” = OMG XDDD I envy Sho for not being jealous and killing Pi XD He’s so calm *admires Sho*

    Ryo-chan’s talk at the end…SWEET ;___;

So. Do I really have to say it was – - – perfect? *fangirls* It’s good to know that I don’t =^____^=

Oh, but the way, I’ll just use the opportunity and compliment the new layout! ^_^ It’s extremely loveable. It’s just a pity that it’s black… Black is no good, too dark for me… But it’s cute anyway **^__^** Yay~! *glomps the layout*

Just stab be for being so irrationally cheerful today *hides*

    *glomps the authors*

    @Chapter 1
yay! I really liked this. and yup, it was really sweet of Ryo to ask Jin out for Kame even though he likes him. poor Ryo, and I loved sulking and jealous Kame! ^_^ I also agree with SumeragiAeka about the layout. Love the pictures used, and looking forward to reading the next chapter!

  6. nach says:

    @Chapter 1
ohhhhhhh…. this is great! i read “double” not too long ago and really enjoyed it. i’m so glad you’re now writing (another, lol) fic with a prominent kame… and potentionally one of my favorite pairings, too.
